Campbell County is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Knoxville .

The county is located in northeast Tennessee and borders Kentucky to the north . It has an area of 1290 square kilometers, of which 47 square kilometers are water.

In the southeast, the county is bounded by Norris Lake , a reservoir of the Clinch River and Powell River , which belong to the Mississippi River basin via the Tennessee River and the Ohio .

Campbell County was formed on September 11, 1806 from parts of Anderson County and Claiborne County. The background of the naming is not completely clear: The county could be named after Arthur Campbell (1742-1811), who was the commanding officer of the border militia during the American Revolutionary War , or after George Washington Campbell (1769-1848), who among other things was Senator , Minister, judge and ambassador to Russia .

The Jellico Commercial Historic District is one of the county's six entries in the NRHP.

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 10, 2018).

According to the 2010 census , Campbell County had 40,716 people in 15,959 households. The population density was 32.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.51 people lived in each of the 15,959 households.

The racial the population was composed of 97.7 percent white, 0.5 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian, 0.1 percent Polynesian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.3 percent of the population, regardless of ethnicity.

21.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.1 percent were between 18 and 64 and 18.8 percent were 65 years or older. 51.3 percent of the population were female.
