Jellico is a small town (with the status " City ") in Campbell County in the US -amerikanischen State Tennessee . In 2010 Jellico had 2,355 inhabitants, the number of which had decreased to 2304 by 2013.
Jellico is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area , the metropolitan area around the city of Knoxville .

The town of Jellico is located in the middle of the Cumberland Mountains in the Elk Greek Valley, right on the border with Kentucky . The name Jellico comes from Angelica (German forest angelica ), a plant that grows in abundance in the surrounding mountains. This is also the name of the small mountain stream that flows into the Cumberland River near Williamsburg, Kentucky.
The geographical coordinates of Jellico are 36 ° 35'16 "north latitude and 84 ° 07'37" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 11.5 km².
Neighboring towns to Jellico are Williamsburg , Kentucky (12 miles north), Clairfield (17 miles east), and Pioneer (18 miles southwest).

A railway line for freight traffic of the Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) merges through the urban area of Jellico in north-south direction .

history
First Jellico was founded in 1878 as Smithburg. After 1880, high quality hard coal was discovered in the mountains around Jellico. With the connection to the railway network in 1883, numerous mines emerged in the area and the city was renamed. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, the Jellico mines were among the most productive in the United States.
In 1906, a train carrying a wagon loaded with dynamite exploded and destroyed parts of the city. The city quickly recovered from this disaster and most of the city's old buildings in the Jellico Commercial Historic District date from this period.
