The Cumberland Mountains are a mountain range in the southwestern part of the Appalachian Mountains in the states of Virginia , Tennessee and Kentucky . They merge into the Cumberland Plateau in the south .
The Cumberland Mountains are sometimes also called Cumberland Mountain, Cumberland Range, Ouasioto Mountains, Ouasiota Mountains, Laurel Mountain, and Pine Mountain. They are named after William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland a son of George II.
The famous Wilderness Road , which runs through the Cumberland Gap , goes through the Cumberland Mountains .
Cumberland County in Tennessee is named after the mountains .
