The McGhee Tyson Airport ( IATA code TYS , ICAO code KTYS ) is the commercial airport in the city Knoxville in the US state of Tennessee . Next to it there is also a small airfield for individual air traffic in Knoxville, called Downtown Island Airport Knoxville . It is named after the pilot Charles McGhee Tyson , who did not return from a patrol flight during the First World War .
The northern part of the airport is mainly used for military purposes, including by the National Guard (134th Air Refueling Group of the Tennessee Air National Guard ) and the regular armed forces (Army Aviation Support Facility as well as the 110th and 119th Tactical Control Squadrons and the 228th Combat Communications Squadron). The cargo flight area is also located on the edge.
The terminal for scheduled flights and facilities for general aviation are located in the southern part .
Location and transport links
McGhee Tyson Airport is located 11 miles south of downtown Knoxville. It borders on the small town of Alcoa . The passenger terminal has a junction on US Highway 129 , which runs east of the airport. In addition, Tennessee State Routes 335 and 429 run south and north of the airport, respectively. In addition, Interstate 140 runs around two kilometers north of the airport. McGhee Tyson Airport is not part of the local public transport system; passengers have to use rental cars, taxis and similar offers.

McGhee Tyson Airport is used by the airlines Allegiant Air , American Eagle , Delta Air Lines / Delta Connection , Frontier Airlines and United Express . A total of 22 destinations are offered in the United States , but two destinations are only served seasonally.

Incidents
- On March 12, 1992, a BAe Jetstream 31 operated by CCAir on behalf of USAir Express ( aircraft registration number N165PC) was flown two kilometers from McGhee Tyson Airport with its landing gear retracted. Both pilots, who were the only people on board, perished in the accident (see also flight accident of a Jetstream 31 of USAir Express 1992 ) .
