The Tri-Cities Regional Airport is an airport near Blountville in the US state of Tennessee . It serves cities in the Tri-Cities region on the border between Tennessee and Virginia .
Location and transport links
Tri-Cities Regional Airport is in the center of the region's three main cities: 19 kilometers northwest of Johnson City , 16 kilometers southeast of Kingsport and 23 kilometers southwest of Bristol .
It is accessible from Interstate 81 , Exit 63. Johnson City visitors can get to their destination via Interstate 26 , Exit 13, and US Highway 75 .
history
After the airfields in Kingsport and Johnson City proved to be too small, both cities, the city of Bristol and Sullivan County agreed to build a common airfield in the middle of the three cities. The Tri-Cities Airport Commission was founded in 1935 and within the next two years two runways , a hangar and a reception building were built. On November 5, 1937, Senator Kenneth McKellar inaugurated the airport as McKellar Field .
