The Air National Guard (ANG) is responsible for the airspace of the National Guard of the United States and together with the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) , the Reserve - armed force of the US Air Force (USAF) ; their headquarters are in Washington, DC

Organization and mandate

The ANG is subordinate to the governors of the individual US states , territories and the District of Columbia and can be called on for assistance in the event of natural disasters or civil unrest. At the same time, it has the state mandate to defend the entire US air and can be mobilized by the president in the event of a crisis . As long as the ANG units are not requested, they are assigned to various main commandos of the Air Force and partly take on the same tasks as the active duty Air Force soldiers. The ANG provides around half of the air transport and air refueling capacity of the Air Mobility Command .

Equipment and personnel

For air fleet consists of about 1,300 machines of all USAF aircraft types, except for the stealth aircraft B-2 and the MH-53 Pave Low helicopter, the B-1 - Bombers and the AC-130 gunship .

The members of the Air National Guard (ANG) are voluntary service payable militiamen . At the end of 2006, the ANG had around 106,000 soldiers plus 1,200 civilian employees .

history

The Air National Guard was formed on September 18, 1947, concurrent with the United States Air Force . In the 20th century it was mainly used for major natural disasters in the country. Mid-1970s began upgrading to a struggling part of the armed forces as so-called "total force" ( German  "full force" ). It has been used regularly abroad since the beginning of the 21st century. a. in the war in Afghanistan , where over 10,000 ANG men are on duty at the same time.
