The reserve of the United States Coast Guard ( English : United States Coast Guard Reserve , abbreviated : USNR ) is the nationwide reserve component of the US Coast Guard .

history

The Coast Guard Reserve was established by Congress in 1939 as a civilian reserve unit and converted into a military unit as the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1941 . The United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve ( SPARS ) was founded by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on November 23, 1942 with Public Law 773 due to the entry of the United States into World War II , but after the war ended dissolved again. United States Coast Guard Auxiliary units were in active service in both World War II and the Vietnam War . Since 2005, the Coast Guard Auxiliary is officially referred to as the United States Coast Guard Reserve .

Obligation

In 2011, the Coast Guard Reserve numbered 8,100 men and women. Coast Guard Reserve members only serve part-time (2 days of training per month and 15 days of active duty per year), unlike members of the US Coast Guard. The US Coast Guard has a special status because it is neither a purely military nor a purely civilian agency , and its operational priorities depend on the prevailing war or peace.
