Frontier Airlines is a US low-cost airline based in Denver and based at Denver International Airport .

history

The original Frontier Airlines was based at what was then Stapleton International Airport in Denver . The 1985 takeover by People Express failed and shortly afterwards forced the combined airlines to merge with Continental Airlines .

In 1994, former Frontier managers founded the successor company. As with its predecessor, the company initially relied on a fleet of up to five Boeing 737s , but in April 2005 the complete switch to aircraft from the Airbus A320 family was completed. Frontier Airlines was the launch customer for the Airbus A318-100 in 2003 and owned up to nine aircraft of this type.

On April 10, 2008, Frontier Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy , but operations continued under bankruptcy protection . On August 13, 2009 Republic Airways Holdings won the bidding contest for Frontier Airlines. This was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings until September 2013 and left Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in autumn 2009.

In the summer of 2013, Frontier Airlines retired their last copies of the Airbus A318-100 .

In September 2013 the previous owner Republic Airways Holdings sold Frontier to the investor Indigo Partners .

In the fall of 2019, the International Council for Clean Transportation (ICCT) named Frontier as the American airline with the best fuel efficiency. The Airbus A320neo aircraft are partly responsible for this .

Destinations

From its home base in Denver International Airport , Frontier Airlines offers flights within the United States, including Fort Lauderdale , Indianapolis , Sacramento and Boston . Internationally, there are flights to Mexico and Costa Rica , among others .

Trivia

  • According to their slogan A Whole Different Animal (dt .: A totally different animal ) bear Frontier machines Images of different wildlife on the tail. Basically, species were selected that are either native to the Rocky Mountains or occur in the areas approached. Each animal has a symbolic name (e.g. Grizwald the Grizzly ) and each representative is assigned very special characteristics. The best animal photos were selected in competitions and placed on the tail unit. In the early stages, the company's Boeing 737-200s carried two different animals on each side. In the early stages of the then young airline, these suggested, not entirely unintentionally, a larger fleet.
