In 1987, a second runway east of the existing runway was put into operation to cope with the growing number of passengers.
In 1996 construction work began on a new terminal building, at the same time the airport was renamed Sacramento International Airport , but no international scheduled flights have yet been offered. Terminal A opened in 1998. The first international scheduled flight took place in 2002, when Mexicana began to connect Sacramento with Guadalajara Airport on a regular basis . A new parking garage was opened on September 23, 2004. In 2006, Sacramento International Airport was granted Port of Entry status .
In 2008 the groundbreaking ceremony took place for a new Terminal B, the construction of which cost around 1.03 billion US dollars . It was built to replace the old Terminal B. The first arriving flight was handled in the new Terminal B on October 5, 2011, but the official opening and first departure did not take place until the next day. The demolition of the old Terminal B was completed in August 2012.
