Gulfstream International Airlines was founded in October 1988 by a former Eastern Airlines captain during a pilots strike at Eastern Airlines and began operations on December 1, 1990.

Initially, the company flew as an on-demand taxi company between Miami, Florida and Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. Due to the difficult political conditions in Haiti, the goals were shifted to the Bahamas. In 1994 a code-share agreement was signed with United Airlines (UAL Corporation). In August 1998, G-Air Holdings took over Paradise International Airlines.

In 2004 a long-term code-share agreement was signed with Continental Airlines .

On October 1, 2010, the UAL Corporation and Continental Airlines merged to form United Continental Holdings . As a result of the merger, the regional partner of Continental Airlines, Continental Connection, also became a partner of United Express . Gulfstream International Airlines is now a partner of United Express.

In 2011, Gulfstream International Airlines was acquired by Silver Airways.

In 2016, Versa Capital Management bought a majority from the original main shareholder Victory Park Capital.
