Southern Airways Express is a US-based regional airline with headquarters in Hernando, Mississippi . Southern Airways Express acts as the local carrier for several cities in the southern United States and offers scheduled air services in the mid-Atlantic states that are subsidized by the United States federal government under the Essential Air Service (EAS).

In the Gulf of Mexico region, Southern operates from executive terminals at primary airports. This means that passengers do not need to check in at the main passenger terminals or go through the security clearance of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). At Southern's mid-Atlantic offices, which include Pittsburgh International Airport and Baltimore-Washington International Airport , passengers get on and off using the primary secure terminals (TSA). In June 2018, Southern became an interline partner of American Airlines , which allows single ticketing and baggage transfers between Southern and American.

history

The airline took off on its first flight from Olive Branch Airport near Memphis , Tennessee in June 2013 . The first destinations were University-Oxford Airport, Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport , New Orleans Lakefront Airport and Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport .

Southern Airways flew on behalf of Seaport Airlines in autumn 2015, but discontinued these flights after Seaport Airlines went bankrupt in January 2016. In December 2016, Southern Airways took over Seaport Airlines' routes to Boone County Airport in Harrison, Arkansas , Hot Springs Memorial Field Airport and South Arkansas Regional Airport.

On March 7, 2016, Southern Airways Express announced that it had acquired Sun Air Express in Fort Lauderdale . This made Southern Airways the second largest airline at Pittsburgh International Airport at the time .

This was followed by expansion to Nashville International Airport and in October 2018 with a new branch at Palm Beach International Airport and the start of services at Key West International Airport and Tampa International Airport in November 2018.

On February 12, 2019, Southern Airways announced that it would take over the Hawaiian airline Mokulele Airlines . Mokulele mainly flies with regional jets such as the Cessna Grand Caravan and Pilatus PC-12 . The combined company operates approximately 1,300 flights more regional flights per week in the US than any other regional airline.
