Republic Airways Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: RJET) is a US holding company . The company operates the subsidiary Republic Airline , which currently operates primarily domestic American feeder flights for Delta Air Lines , American Airlines and United Airlines .

history

Republic Airways was founded in 1998 as a holding company in Indianapolis. The only subsidiary at the time was the recently acquired Chautauqua Airlines , which operated regional flights for US Airways (and previously for its predecessor Allegheny Airlines ). The name should build on the success of the 1986 dissolved Republic Airlines (1979-1986) , to which otherwise there was no connection. On May 15, 1998, Wexford Management, which also included other American airlines, bought Republic Airways. In 1999 Republic Airways formally founded the subsidiary Republic Airline, under whose name, however, no airline was initially operated. The only thing that had been secured was the brand name. On May 26, 2004, Wexford Management brought Republic Airways to NASDAQ as an RJET .

In the following years, the subsidiary Chautauqua Airlines carried out regional flights for American Airlines , Trans World Airlines , Continental Airlines , United Airlines , America West and Delta Air Lines, among others .

In 2004 the subsidiary Republic Airline was launched as an airline. This enabled the company to bypass a contractual clause with the American Airlines pilots' union, according to which regional airlines working for American were not allowed to operate aircraft with more than 50 passenger seats. Chautauqua Airlines, which works for American, added an Embraer 170 with 70 seats to its fleet for United Express. These machines were therefore finally transferred to Republic Airline. In 2005 Republic Airways paid the Allied Pilots Association $ 6.6 million to resolve the dispute. To prevent further payments, Republic Airways bought the airline Shuttle America and transferred the Embraer 170 machines there. Shuttle America had previously only flown with a Saab 340 aircraft. In September of the same year Republic acquired 113 slots at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, 24 slots at LaGuardia Airport and 10 Embraer 170s from US Airways , which were then leased to US Airways.

In January 2007 Republic Airways signed an 11-year contract with Frontier Airlines under which Chautauqua Airlines operated regional flights as Frontier JetExpress . On April 23, 2008, Republic terminated this contract after Frontier Airlines had been placed under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early April and reclaimed the Embraer 170 from Frontier by June 23. The reason was the high demand for machines of this type for other applications. In July 2009 Republic Airways took over the majority of the airlines Midwest Airlines and Mokulele Airlines . In October 2009 Republic Airways announced the offer to take over the debts of Frontier Airlines Holdings together with various financial institutions, thereby formally buying Frontier Airlines. By 2010, Midwest Airlines was merged with Frontier and only the latter brand name was retained. On December 2, 2013 Republic sold the subsidiary Frontier to the investor Indigo Partners. The Mokulele stake went to the Mesa Air Group .

In November 2011 Republic Airways ordered 60 Airbus A320neo and 20 Airbus A319neo for Frontier Airlines. All machines will be equipped with Leap-X engines from CFM . The order was valued at just under $ 7 billion.

In 2014 Republic Airways announced that it would merge the subsidiaries Republic Airline, Shuttle America and Chautauqua Airlines for cost reasons. Chautauqua Airlines was merged into Shuttle America and ended flight operations on December 31, 2014. Shuttle America, in turn, was subsequently integrated into Republic Airline and ceased to exist on March 30, 2017.

On February 25, 2016, Republic Airways, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 creditors protection , which ended on April 30, 2017 with a restructuring plan.
