Republic Airline, Inc. is an American regional airline based in Indianapolis that operates feeder flights for major US airlines and operates as a subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings .

history

Republic Airline was founded in November 1999, but initially remained inactive and did not have its own Air Operator Certificate until 2005 . The airline was finally launched as an airline in 2005 to circumvent a contractual clause for regional jets with American Airlines , according to which their feeder airlines were not allowed to use aircraft with more than 50 seats. Republic Airline's sister company, Chautauqua Airlines , offered feeder flights for American Airlines and expanded its fleet for United Express to include 170 Embraer aircraft with 70 seats. This constituted a breach of contract with the American pilots union. Therefore, the parent company Republic Airways transferred these aircraft to the newly certified Republic Airline, but still had to make a million payment to the pilots union.

In 2002, US Airways founded the regional airline MidAtlantic Airways for pilots exempted from Chapter 11 and began operations in 2004. As part of the bankruptcy prevention for US Airways 25 ordered for MidAtlantic were Embraer 170 all sold by 2006 at Republic Airlines and the latter from now on as US Airways Express operated. In December 2004 Republic began regional flights for Delta Air Lines with Embraer 170 aircraft as Delta Connection. On March 6, 2006, Republic Airline announced that it would station an overnight maintenance company and flight crews at Pittsburgh International Airport .

On January 11, 2007, an 11-year contract was signed with Frontier Airlines , according to which Republic Airline 17 Embraer 170 operates as Frontier JetExpress . The first aircraft for this were operated from March, but a further cooperation was not possible due to the insolvency of Frontier in early April 2008. On April 23, 2008, Republic Airways Holdings canceled the contract with Frontier and demanded the machines to be returned by June 23, 2008. Republic needed the coveted machines on the market for other uses or for sale. In 2009 Republic Airways bought Frontier Airlines. Since the sale of the sister company Frontier Airlines in September 2013, Republic Airline no longer flies for them. On February 1, 2008, Republic Airline opened a new base at Port Columbus International Airport .

From 2008 Republic Airline took over flights for Midwest Airlines , which was bought by Republic Airways in 2009. Republic Airways also bought Shuttle America in 2005 , which was merged and dissolved with Republic Airline by 2017. Republic Airline has been flying as American Eagle for American Airlines since 2013 .

On February 26, 2016, the parent company Republic Airways Holdings, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 creditors protection , which was officially ended on April 30, 2017 with a restructuring plan. Although the company had consistently posted profits since spring 2014, it had entered into too many leasing commitments for unprofitable small aircraft in the past and had also had increasing difficulties in finding enough pilots for its fleet, which among other things led to disputes with Delta Air Lines due to non-performance of the contract.

The company maintains a total of ten stations for pilots and flight attendants at Chicago O'Hare, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Miami, LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington Reagan National and Columbus, Ohio airports.

Destinations and brand identity

Republic Airline does not have its own route network, but operates mainly on the Midwest , the Southern States and especially the East of the USA , domestic American flights in the name and branding of American Eagle , Delta Connection and United Express and, until their dissolution in 2015, also of US Airways Express . American Eagle also serves selected destinations in the Caribbean .
