history
Foundation and first years
Shuttle America was founded in 1995 and began operating on November 12, 1998 as a low-cost airline. The headquarters were in Windsor Locks and the home base at Hartford's Bradley International Airport. She began the line operation with the connection from Hartford (Connecticut) to Buffalo . The first aircraft was a De Havilland DHC-8-311 . Shuttle America's route network and fleet grew very quickly in the first year.
To reach the market in the Boston area, Shuttle America set up a base at Hanscom Field regional airport in 1999. Bedford, Massachusetts Airport is 12 miles west of Boston and had several advantages over Logan Airport , including free parking, car rentals and access to Interstate 95 . From there, Shuttle America flew to Buffalo, New York-LaGuardia , Trenton (New Jersey) and Greensboro (North Carolina) via Trenton. At the time, Trenton was the hub for the route network.
Development since 2000
Shortly before September 11, 2001 , Shuttle America went bankrupt and was taken over by Wexford Holdings LLC , the then owner of Chautauqua Airlines . Shuttle America then began operating as US Airways Express in codeshare for US Airways . Shuttle America operated shuttle services to the US Airways hub in Pittsburgh and seasonal flights to Martha's Vineyard . Shuttle America flew the smaller De Havilland DHC-8-100 until the delivery of Chautauqua's Saab 340 . These were leased from Allegheny Airlines and were an interim solution during the processing of the Saab 340. The DHC-8-300 were eventually sold to LIAT and Piedmont Airlines .
In 2002, Shuttle America relocated its headquarters to Fort Wayne , Indiana. Due to the bankruptcy, the independent airline became a regional airline for the major airlines. In the spring, Shuttle America was taken over by Republic Airways Holdings.
Shuttle America today maintained flight crew bases in Atlanta , Columbus, Ohio , Chicago and Indianapolis . Most of the fleet was originally operated by Chautauqua Airlines, but was gradually transferred to Shuttle America in order to circumvent the American Airlines pilot clause. The agreement between American Airlines and their pilots limits codeshare feeders to machines with a maximum of 50 seats.
In 2014 Republic Airways decided to merge its subsidiaries - including Shuttle America - for cost reasons. First, Chautauqua Airlines was absorbed into Shuttle America, and Shuttle America was eventually integrated into Republic Airline . The last Shuttle America flight took place on January 31, 2017.
Destinations
Shuttle America operated feeder flights for United Airlines under the United Express brand and for Delta Airlines as Delta Connection . She recently flew to 66 cities in 24 US states as well as destinations in Canada, Mexico and Jamaica.
