Martha's Vineyard is a 231.75 km² island off the south coast of Cape Cod in the US state of Massachusetts . Originally the island was an area of ​​the Wampanoag Indians; in their Wampanoag language they called the island Noepe or Land under the Rivers . Martha's Vineyard includes six of the seven parishes in Dukes County (Aquinnah, Chilmark, Edgartown , Oak Bluffs , Tisbury, West Tisbury). The municipality of Chilmark also includes the uninhabited island of Nomans Land (2,477 km²) further south . Martha's Vineyard has a total of around 15,000 residents.

At the western end of the island is the village of Gay Head (Aquinnah), where Wampanoag still live today. Here is the Edwin DeVries Vanderhoop Homestead , a house built in the 1890s for the family of Edwin DeVries Vanderhoop (1848-1923). Today it serves as a cultural center and a museum for tribal history under the name Aquinnah Cultural Center .

According to the 2000 census, 36.63% of 344 residents identified themselves as Native American . On July 16, 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr. , the son of former US President John F. Kennedy , as well as his wife and sister-in-law, died when the plane he was piloting crashed into the sea in poor weather conditions not far from Martha's Vineyard.

The capital Edgartown includes the island of Chappaquiddick , immediately to the east , known from Senator Edward Kennedy's car accident on July 18, 1969, in which his companion Mary Jo Kopechne died.
