Chappaquiddick Ferry Terminal |
Chappaquiddick is a small island off the coast of the US state of Massachusetts in Dukes County and is part of the city of Edgartown . It is located east of Martha's Vineyard Island . A small ferry line connects them with the main island.
Chappaquiddick has an area of 15.915 km², on which 172 people lived all year round in 2000. The long-established residents do not see themselves as Edgartown residents.
The island became famous when Mary Jo Kopechne was killed on July 18, 1969 in a car accident caused by US Senator Edward Kennedy . Because Kennedy had left the scene of the accident without permission, he was sentenced to two months in prison, which he did not have to serve. It is generally believed, however, that his conduct in connection with this accident significantly reduced his chances of becoming President of the United States .
