Edgartown is a city in the US state of Massachusetts on the island of Martha's Vineyard on the coast of Cape Cod in the United States and the county seat of Dukes County .

Demographics

At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ) the city had 3,779 inhabitants on a land area of ​​69.9 km². The median age was 40.3 years (US national average: 35.3 years). Part of the city of Edgartown is the small island of Chappaquiddick , which became famous worldwide in 1969 after a traffic accident caused by Senator Edward Kennedy in which a person was killed. The historic city center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Edgartown Village Historic District . Other entries include the Cape Poge Light and Edgartown Harbor Light lighthouses .

The city was the location for the film Jaws and thus the film set for the fictional location Amity.
