Edgartown is a city in the US state of Massachusetts on the island of Martha's Vineyard on the coast of Cape Cod in the United States and the county seat of Dukes County .
Demographics
At the time of the 2000 census ( US Census 2000 ) the city had 3,779 inhabitants on a land area of 69.9 km². The median age was 40.3 years (US national average: 35.3 years). The per capita income (English per capita income ) amounted to 25,740 dollars (the national average for the USA: 21,587 US dollars). 4.2 percent of the population had their income below the poverty line (national average in the USA: 12.4 percent). About 23.9 percent of the population are of English descent and about 6.4 percent are of German descent .
Others
Part of the city of Edgartown is the small island of Chappaquiddick , which became famous worldwide in 1969 after a traffic accident caused by Senator Edward Kennedy in which a person was killed. The historic city center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Edgartown Village Historic District . Other entries include the Cape Poge Light and Edgartown Harbor Light lighthouses .
The city was the location for the film Jaws and thus the film set for the fictional location Amity.
