John Belushi
John Adam Belushi (born January 24, 1949 in Chicago , Illinois , † March 5, 1982 in West Hollywood ) was an American singer and film actor and the brother of the blues musician and actor James Belushi .
Life
John Belushi grew up as the son of Albanian immigrants in Wheaton , Illinois . Already during his college days he appeared in plays. From the late 1970s he played with Dan Aykroyd in the band The Blues Brothers .
He became known to a wide audience in the United States through his appearances on the television show Saturday Night Live . In 1978 Belushi made his first film appearance in the comedy I think a horse will kick me . In 1978 the LP A Briefcase Full of Blues was released , with live versions of old blues numbers and original compositions. His greatest film success was the musical comedy Blues Brothers by John Landis , in which he appeared on the side of Dan Aykroyd . Together with this he performed before the film (as Jake and Elwood Blues) on concerts. This musical project was supported by The Blues Brothers Band , which included well-known musicians who also played in the film. The film soundtrack was later released, and is still the Blues Brothers' most successful record today . Belushi liked to imitate the famous rhythm 'n' blues musician Joe Cocker and even performed with him.
Belushi was a long-time drug user. After an excessive drug party in a bungalow of the Chateau Marmont Hotel in West Hollywood , he died in 1982 at the age of 33 from a speedball , an injection of cocaine and heroin , since then also known as "Belushi" in American slang. He was found lifeless by his personal trainer, Bill Wallace , who was still trying to revive him. A little later, Catherine Belushi's friend, Evelyn Smith, admitted to accidentally giving the actor a fatal dose and then leaving him behind; she therefore had to serve an extended prison term. Belushi's grave is in Abel's Hill Cemetery in Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard , Massachusetts .
