The Rutles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rutles were or are a fictional British band from the 1970s that parodied the Beatles .

history

In the 1970s, Neil Innes worked with Eric Idle on a television comedy series called Rutland Weekend Television . Part of this series was the fictional band The Rutles, a parody of the Beatles. Innes composed songs for this fictional band that sounded very "Beatle-esque". The Rutles were so successful that an entire television film was produced in 1978. This film - The Rutles - All You Need Is Cash - describes, based on the story of the Beatles, the career of the Rutles in a " mockumentary ". Innes composed the music for the film and played the role of Ron Nasty.

Some popular actors completed the team, including a. Michael Palin , Gwen Taylor , Terence Bayler and the Saturday Night Live stars Dan Aykroyd , John Belushi , Gilda Radner and Bill Murray (in his first film role). Even George Harrison turns up - barely recognizable - as a reporter.

In addition, Mick Jagger and Paul Simon (as themselves) could be won for the film . Bianca Jagger plays Martini, the wife of Dirk McQuickley, Ron Wood plays a member of the Hells Angels , and the performance artist Roger McGough plays an interviewee.

In 1996 there was a reunion of the band - possibly due to the Beatles reunion in 1994 - with the album Archeology as an allusion to the anthology created by the Beatles reunion .

In 2002 - 25 years after All You Need Is Cash - Eric Idle made a sequel called The Rutles 2 - Can't Buy Me Lunch . The sequel mainly uses images and unused scenes from the previous film. The soundtrack also includes tracks from the Archeology album.

In 2010, based on the Beatles remix album Love and the Cirque du Soleil show of the same name, the Lunch project followed .
