And I Love Her ( German  "And I love her" ) is a song by the British band The Beatles , which was released in 1964 on the album A Hard Day's Night and was also featured in the film of the same name . It was largely written by Paul McCartney and published under the copyright Lennon / McCartney .

background

McCartney wrote And I Love Her in the house of the parents of his then-girlfriend Jane Asher in London's Wimpole Street. Jane Asher was probably the source of inspiration for the song. John Lennon claimed in 1980 to have written the middle part of the song, which McCartney denied. The Beatles' publisher Dick James , on the other hand, reported that the middle section was only composed during the recording session in the studio within half an hour after he and George Martin had asked the band to do it.

admission

The recordings for And I Love Her found the end of February 1964 in London's Abbey Road Studios instead. The producer was George Martin , assisted by Norman Smith . The Beatles took three attempts to find the right arrangement for the song. The first attempt at recording on February 25, 1964 produced two takes of the song that did not meet the expectations of the Beatles. So they completely re- recorded And I Love Her the following day with 16 takes, but were still not satisfied with the result. Ultimately, the band reduced the arrangement significantly and played the song exclusively on acoustic instruments ( acoustic guitars , congas and tonewoods ). With this instrumentation, the final version of the song was recorded on February 27, 1964 in two takes.

publication

And I Love Her was released on July 10, 1964 on the album A Hard Day's Night . On July 20, 1964, the song was released as a single in the US and reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 . A single released on August 4, 1964 in Germany with I Should Have Known Better on the B-side reached number 6 in the German single charts. An early version of the song of 25 February 1964 was published in 1995 as part of the Anthology - series.

There are an unusually large number of mixes of the song. The versions for the film and the mono mix for the British album version differ in that McCartney's vocals were doubled on the British album version. The film version, however, is included on the US version of the album. The vocals are also doubled on the stereo version of And I Love Her . The stereo version of the German album Something New was artificially lengthened by repeating a passage at the end of the song six instead of four times.

For BBC Radio the Beatles presented And I Love Her only once on July 14, 1964 on Top Gear . In November 2013 this version appeared on the album On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 .
