The King's Singers are a six-piece a cappella ensemble from Great Britain . Their name refers to King's College in Cambridge , England , where this group was founded in 1968 by former choir scholars . In the United Kingdom, their popularity peaked in the 1970s and early 1980s. In addition, after their first overseas tour to Australia and New Zealand in 1972, they also managed to reach a wider international audience. In 1987, they appeared as guests in the ABC TV special Julie Andrews: The Sound Of Christmas , which won an Emmy . In February 2009, her CD Simple Gifts won a Grammy Award in the " Best Classic Crossover Album " category . At the 54th Grammy Awards in February 2012, they and Eric Whitacre received a prize in the “ Best Choral Performance ” category for the album Light and Gold , on which they performed the title The Stolen Child , which Whitacre made especially for the ensemble was written.

Today the ensemble performs around 120 concerts a year around the world, mainly in Europe , the USA , Australia and the Far East . The People's Republic of China has also been part of their tour list for some time , and in 2013 the ensemble went on a concert tour through South America for the first time. In 2018 the King's Singers celebrate their 50th anniversary. The group is celebrating this special anniversary with a number of different activities. This includes a dinner with the former members. In addition, they have released the three-part album GOLD, which is intended to reflect the extraordinary diversity of their repertoire over the past 50 years. It contains antique motets as well as brand new commissions and many popular arrangements. On their anniversary tour - the GOLD World Tour - they make stops around the world in large concert halls and churches, for example in Carnegie Hall in New York or in the Salle Gaveau in Paris. In their homeland in Great Britain, the King's Singers celebrated their anniversary at the beginning of 2018 with two special concerts. The first took place on January 13th in St. John's in Smith Square, London, at which almost all former members were also present. The second they created 3 days later in the chapel of their spiritual home, King's College in Cambridge.

history

Early years

The roots of the King's Singers go back to 1965 when six choir students at King's College at Cambridge University named Martin Lane, Alastair Hume, Alastair Thompson , Richard Salter , Simon Carrington and Brian Kay under the name Schola Cantorum Pro Musica Profana recorded a joint album in Cantabridgiense . This group gave their first concert under the name of King's Singers on May 1, 1968 in Queen Elisabeth Hall, London , together with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields , Simon Preston ( organ ) and Barry Tuckwell ( horn ). Just a few months later there were first changes in the composition of the ensemble. First, in 1968, the countertenor Martin Lane withdrew from the ensemble due to a tumor disease. In the following years, this was alternately replaced by Felicity Palmer , Eleanor Capp, Caryl Newnham, James Bowman or Richard Baker, until in the summer of 1969 Nigel Perrin, after completing his studies, was able to join the ensemble as an integral part and new first countertenor. In addition, baritone Richard Salter left the ensemble in 1969 because he received a Richard Tauber scholarship and went to Vienna. As a result, Nigel Beavan took his part until the end of the year. Then Anthony Holt joined the ensemble, who was already first choice for the position of first baritone after Salter's departure, but initially rejected engagement due to his secure employment and the still relatively low level of awareness of the ensemble. With Holt's entry a stable formation emerged again, which lasted until Alastair Thompson's departure after the ten-year anniversary in 1978.

Establishment

In their early years, the King's Singers performed primarily in Great Britain. Occasionally they also performed in other European countries, but their ensemble activity was still exclusively part-time. Simon Carrington and Alastair Hume, for example, were both employed as double bass players in the BBC Northern Orchestra (now the BBC Philharmonic ) in Manchester . With the offer of a 35-part concert tour through Australia and New Zealand in 1972, they decided to carry out their work full-time. That was the beginning of their international success. Trips to South Africa , Canada , the USA and all over Europe followed. During the touring breaks, they work on albums for their record company EMI or appear on radio and television programs. The highlights of the first 10 years were guest appearances on the Nana Mouskouri Show and the Ronnie Corbett Show, her own show - the King's Singers World of Music - as well as multiple awards with gold records .

After that long time, the group assumed that if a member of the King's Singers decided to leave the group, that would inevitably mean the end of the ensemble. It was believed that it would be impossible to find a suitable new singer, let alone integrate him. However, when Alastair Thompson decided to leave the ensemble in 1978, their contractual obligations went so far into the future that it was impossible to quit. So when he switched to Bill Ives, an ensemble member was exchanged for the first time. The following time included a film about the Madrigal History Tour, the collaboration with Paul McCartney on the " Frog Choir ", the first trip to East Asia, regular appearances in Johnny Carson's Tonight Show in the USA, the start of a publishing company and the publication a book on the ensemble's outstanding projects.

Gradually there were further changes, so that today no founding member is an active part of the ensemble. Former members now include David Hurley, Paul Phoenix, Timothy Wayne-Wright, Christopher Gabbitas, Jeremy Jackman, Colin Mason, Bob Chilcott , Stephen Connolly, Bruce Russell, Philip Lawson , Nigel Short, Gabriel Crouch and Robin Tyson.

The current ensemble consists of the following people:

  • Patrick Dunachie, Countertenor 1, since 2016
  • Edward Button, Countertenor 2, since 2019
  • Julian Gregory, tenor , since 2014
  • Christopher Bruerton, baritone 1, since 2012
  • Nick Ashby, baritone 2, since 2019
  • Jonathan Howard, bass , since 2010

So there are now 28 official members of the King's Singers . Special mention should be made of Alastair Hume and Simon Carrington, who were founding members of the ensemble for over 25 years, and David Hurley, who left the ensemble in August 2016 after 26 12 years of membership. The King's Singers currently have a non-UK member, New Zealander Christopher Bruerton, for the first time, and Patrick Dunachie, a graduate of King's College, after a long time.

Around the year 2000, the King's Singers called themselves king'singers for short (with a small k at the beginning and just an s in the middle). This is evidenced by the cover of the CD Fire-Water and some sheet music.

today

Today the King's Singers are on concert tour around the world for more than half of the year. They perform both alone and with company. For example, they have already worked in concerts and CD productions with the Ensemble Sarband , the Philharmonie Südwestfalen , Evelyn Glennie , the Mormon Tabernacle Choir , the Concordia Choir and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. In 2014 they produced a winter album together with the oboist Albrecht Mayer . As a rule, the King's Singers release at least one new album a year. In addition, they are in great demand as lecturers for ensembles of all sizes and organize master classes and workshops every year .

Style and repertoire

The King's Singers are known for their special ensemble sound. This is mainly due to their initially quite unusual composition. As a rule, six-part British-style male ensembles consist of two counter tenors , two tenors and two basses or, instead of two basses, one baritone and one bass. The King's Singers instead consist of two counter tenors, a tenor, two baritones and a bass. This formation, which at the beginning came about by chance, leads to a greater sonority in the lower voices and thus to the characteristic sound feature of the group.

In terms of their repertoire, the King's Singers have a wide range, so that they can not really be categorized in relation to a certain genre . Their program includes, among other things, polyphonic works from the Renaissance , sounds from the Romantic Age , works by contemporary composers, religious pieces of music or arrangements of current folk and pop songs in "close harmony" . They sing in a wide variety of languages, in addition to English, often also in French, Italian, Spanish, German or Latin. Over the years, a collection of over 3000 different works and arrangements has accumulated in her personal library. From this stylistic abundance, the King's Singers usually present a small but stylistically broad selection in most of their concerts (for example from “ Byrd to Bublé ”), so that hardly any concert is the same as another. Her aim is not only to entertain the audience with her fine British humor , but also to broaden their musical horizons. Listeners who come to the concerts because of the pop arrangements are introduced to the literature of the Renaissance, for example, and of course vice versa .

The King's Singers have always worked regularly with contemporary composers. The long list of composers who have written specifically for the ensemble includes names such as György Ligeti , Richard Rodney Bennett , Eric Whitacre , Luciano Berio , Peter Maxwell Davies , Krzysztof Penderecki , John Rutter , Tōru Takemitsu , John Tavener and Alexander L'Estrange. In addition, some members also arranged for the ensemble themselves. In this context, the extensive work by Bob Chilcott and Philip Lawson deserves special mention.

Part of the King's Singers repertoire is available in the form of music books and single editions. This enables amateur ensembles to sing after popular original arrangements.

Reception and appreciation

The King's Singers, along with the Swingle Singers, are widely regarded as one of the world's best singing ensembles according to western cultural standards. If you focus on the singing of men in ensembles - the Swingles are a mixed ensemble - then the King's Singers are possibly the best male singing ensemble in the world, and have been for about 50 years. Before the King's Singers, the Comedian Harmonists were considered to be the best professional vocal ensemble ever for almost half a century, especially due to the fact that they could perform from around 250 pieces ready for performance at any time. The King's Singers set this record of pieces ready for performance a long time ago.

occupation

The following table gives an overview of the different line-ups over time from the pre- King's Singers era to the present day.

* After Martin Lane's illness, the following people temporarily took up the position of first countertenor: Felicity Palmer , Eleanor Capp and Caryl Newnham (sopranos) and James Bowman and Richard Baker (countertenors).

** After Richard Sater's departure, Nigel Beavan has now taken up his position.

All of the representatives listed below are not listed as full and official members of the ensemble. For this reason, the number of previous King's Singers members is usually stated as 28. This results in an average length of stay of around 11 years per member in the ensemble since it was officially founded in 1968.

Activities of former members

Many former members of the King's Singers continue to work in the field of (choral) music, for example countertenor Nigel Short with Tenebrae , baritone Gabriel Crouch as a lecturer at a US university, baritone Simon Carrington as a professor at Yale University (USA) , and tenor Bob Chilcott and baritone Philip Lawson as composer and arranger.
