Joseph Horovitz , also Joseph Horowitz (born May 26, 1926 in Vienna , Austria ) is a British composer and conductor .

Life

From 1936 he attended the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna and was expelled from school in 1938 with a large number of classmates under the cynical term "retraining" due to his Jewish descent. Shortly afterwards he emigrated to England with his family. There he studied music and modern languages ​​at New College , Oxford . He then went to the Royal College of Music in London and studied composition with Gordon Jacob . He then completed his composition studies with Nadia Boulanger in Paris for a year . He began his musical career from 1950 to 1951 as the music director of the Bristol Old Vic Company in Bristol . He then worked as a ballet and opera conductor for various international companies, with whom he toured Europe and the USA . He achieved international fame with the music for various TV series, such as B. Lillie , Rumpole , The Search for the Nile , The Flight against Slavery , Wessex Tales and Partners in Crime ( Detective Agency Blunt ).

Since 1961 he has been Professor of Composition at the Royal College of Music , London. In 1970 he became a board member of the Composers' Guild of Great Britain . From 1969 to 1996 he served on the board of the Performing Right Society .

From 1962 he shifted the focus of his activity increasingly to composing. His oeuvre includes 16 ballets, including the well-known Alice in Wonderland from 1953, 2 one-act operas ( The Dumb Wife , libretto Peter Shaffer , and Gentleman's Island , libretto Gordon Snell ), concerts for violin, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, euphonium , Tuba and percussion as well as a very popular and often played jazz concert for harpsichord and chamber orchestra, which was composed at the suggestion of George Malcolm . A larger number of works are written for wind orchestras and brass bands. He received the Commonwealth Medal in 1959 and many other awards for his compositions.
