From 1919 to 1923 he studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Stanford , Boult and Vaughan Williams (with the latter he was also a pen friend afterwards). Works (selection)
Gordon Jacob left around 700 compositions, including
- 1942 Clarinet Quintet in G minor
- 1956 sextet for piano and wind quintet in B flat major
- 1971 PARTITA for Solo Bassoon
- 1973 Saxophone Quartet No. 1
- 1975 Duo for clarinet and bassoon
- 1978 Four Fancies flute quartet
Jacob was considered England's great master of instrumentation. This can be seen from the example of the harmonica :
- 1957 Divertimento for Harmonica and String Quartet - Dedicated to Larry Adler
- 1957 Five Pieces for Harmonica and Orchestra (or piano) - Dedicated to Tommy Reilly
He also created compositions for other otherwise neglected instruments and extraordinary line-ups:
- Concert for bass trombone
- Concert for accordion
- four pieces for tuba quartet
- Concert for kettledrum
- Pieces for flute, trumpet, bass drum and piano
His instrumentation earned him the task of writing the orchestral arrangement of the British national anthem for Elizabeth II's coronation celebrations in 1953.
