Philip Lawson

Philip Lawson (born February 19, 1957 in Crawley , West Sussex ) is a British composer , arranger and baritone . He was for 18 years a member of the a cappella ensembles The King's Singers with whom he a 2009 Grammy for Best Album in the Classical - Crossover received range.

Training and career start

Lawson studied music at York University with a focus on composition , organ and singing. He then worked as a freelance singer and in 1982 took a position as cantor at Salisbury Cathedral . From 1989 he also headed the music department of a primary school in Salisbury , the Chafyn Grove Preparatory School.

The King's Singers

As a replacement for Simon Carrington , Lawson became second baritone in the a cappella ensemble The King's Singers in 1994 . Two years later he took over the position of first baritone from Bruce Russell while Gabriel Crouch replaced him as second baritone. As a member, he performed over 2000 concerts, was part of around 30 CD and DVD recordings and gave numerous master classes . From 1997 he also arranged a large part of the pieces they performed. Over 50 of these arrangements have been released. In 2008, the King's Singers won a Grammy in Classical Crossover for their album Simple Gifts . He arranged 10 of the 16 pieces on the album. Another Grammy followed in 2012, this time together with Eric Whitacre for the best choral performance . The award went to the Whitacres album Light and Gold , for which the King's Singers recorded The Stolen Child . During his time with the King's Singers, he also worked as an accountant for the ensemble. In 2012 he ended his engagement with the King's Singers, replacing Christopher Bruerton as the first baritone. Since then he has taught at Wells Cathedral Music School and continues to work as a composer and arranger.
