Richard Salter (born November 12, 1943 in Hindhead , Surrey , † February 1, 2009 in Karlsruhe ) was a British opera and concert singer ( baritone ).

Life

After studying English literature at the University of Cambridge , Richard Salter began studying singing at the London Royal College of Music , which he completed at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna. Already in Cambridge Salter was a founding member of the King's Singers , to which he only belonged for half a year.

His first permanent engagement at an opera house was in 1971 at the Darmstadt State Theater . Contracts with the operas in Kiel and Bremen followed. From 1987 to 2007 he was a member of the ensemble of the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz in Munich. Since 1994 he has been a Bavarian chamber singer.

He not only sang at the Gärtnerplatztheater, but could also be heard as Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Bavarian State Opera . He also embodied this role at the Nuremberg Opera House in the new production of the opera on the occasion of Nuremberg's 950th anniversary. His interpretation of the Beckmesser figure was one of the singer's outstanding achievements, emphasizing above all the deeply human side of the figure.

He also taught at the Bavarian Theater Academy .

Early on in his career, guest appearances took him to the major opera houses in Hamburg , Berlin , Paris and Vienna , where he was repeatedly obliged, particularly because of his special skills in dealing with contemporary music.

Modern repertoire

A large number of contemporary composers have composed specifically for Richard Salter's voice, which is why his name is associated with the world premieres of numerous operas in the last quarter of the 20th century, such as Jakob Lenz by Wolfgang Rihm , Enrico by Manfred Trojahn , and The Face in the Mirror by Jörg Widmann or Das Schloss by Aribert Reimann . Richard Salter was also the only singer who had sung the part of Wozzeck in both Alban Berg and Manfred Gurlitt 's repertoire.

For September 2009, he was scheduled to play the title role in the world premiere of Philip Glass's opera Kepler at the Landestheater Linz under the musical direction of Dennis Russell Davies . Richard Salter died in Karlsruhe, where he was to begin rehearsals for Benjamin Britten's death in Venice at the Badisches Staatstheater .

Audio documents

Richard Salter's voice is on record or CD with songs by Rihm and Reimann, but also z. B. recorded with Robert Schumann's scenes from Goethe's Faust . The only complete recording of Rihm's Jakob Lenz documents Salter in the title role.
