Daryl Runswick

Daryl Runswick (born October 12, 1946 in Leicester ) is a British jazz musician ( bass , piano , composition , arrangements ).

Live and act

Runswick began taking piano lessons at the age of five; at the age of ten he switched to the cello , at twelve to the double bass . A year later he played traditional jazz in a local band . After studying music at Cambridge for three years , he received his bachelor's degree. During this time he worked at the Cambridge Jazz Club , where he also accompanied traveling musicians. After a station in Edinburgh, he moved to London in 1968, where he initially found work in the quintet of John Curtis / Ian Bird. He then accompanied Bobby Wellins , the London Jazz Four , Barbara Thompson and Lionel Grigson / Peter Burden. From 1970 to 1983 he was part of the band of John Dankworth and Cleo Laine , first as a bassist, then as a keyboardist ; Laine recorded 15 of his songs. During this time he also performed with Ray Russell , Kenny Wheeler , Ian Hamer and Tubby Hayes and also accompanied Frank Sinatra and Count Basie at a concert at the Royal Festival Hall . He has also appeared on recordings by Blossom Dearie , Alan Parsons , Barbara Dickson , Georgie Fame , Annie Ross, and Hoagy Carmichael .

Since 1984 he has concentrated on arranging and composing, among others for the King's Singers and for Electric Phoenix . He also composed for the feature films Gullsandur (1985) and No Surrender (1985) and the television series Seekers (1993).

Between 1995 and 2005 he taught composition at Trinity College of Music . He wrote the book Rock, Pop and Jazz Arranging .
