Tubby Hayes
Edward Brian "Tubby" Hayes (born January 30, 1935 in London ; † June 8, 1973 ibid) was a British jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , flute , vibraphone , composition ).
Live and act
Hayes learned the violin at the age of eight, switched to the saxophone at the age of twelve and became a professional musician at the age of 15. In 1951 he joined the band of Kenny Baker and then played with the big bands of Ambrose, Vic Lewis and Jack Parnell . In 1955 and 1956 he directed his own octet (with Dickie Hawdon , among others ), with whom he toured Great Britain. Between 1957 and 1959 he led the band Jazz Couriers , u. a. with Ronnie Scott , Terry Shannon, Jeff Clyne and Bill Eyden and Phil Seamen , who made recordings for the Tempo label ; In 1959 he was also with Kurt Edelhagen and went on tour with his orchestra in Germany. He was the first British musician to play regularly in the USA between 1961 and 1965 and made several records with renowned North American musicians such as Rahsaan Roland Kirk , Clark Terry and James Moody . In London he led his own big band in the early 1960s, for which he wrote most of the compositions. In 1964 he represented Paul Gonsalves at a London appearance by the Ellington Orchestra . With Charles Mingus , Dave Brubeck , John Dankworth and Harry Beckett , he was in the movie The hot night (All night long) (1963, directed by Basil Dearden , an Othello - variant) and with his own combo in show we what we have ( 1964) and in Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965, directed by Freddie Francis, with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing ) seen and heard. He has guested at numerous jazz festivals in Europe and led a quartet with Mike Pyne , Ron Mathewson and Tony Levin . Hayes, who also worked with Cleo Laine , died during heart surgery. He was in the Golders Green Crematorium in London cremated , where his ashes is located.
Ian Carr paid tribute to him as a seldom talented composer and arranger and as a charismatic big band leader.
