Tony Levin (* 30th January 1940 in Much Wenlock , Shropshire , † 3. February 2011 ) was an English drummer of modern jazz .

Live and act

Levin studied drums and improvisation. He first played with Joe Harriott ; In 1965 he became a member of the Tubby Hayes Quartet in London (LP "Mexican Green", 1967). In 1969 he switched to Alan Skidmore's quintet , to which he belonged until the mid-1970s; he also played with the rhythm section of the quintet, the trio by John Taylor (LP Decipher , 1973), but also with the sextet by Stan Sulzmann . He has also worked for Humphrey Lyttelton and guest soloists such as Toots Thielemans , Lee Konitz , Joe Henderson , Zoot Sims , Steve Lacy and Gary Burton . He then played with Elton Dean , Gordon Becks Gyroscope , John Surman ( Moers Festival 1975), or the group Nucleus . For more than two decades he was a member of Keith Tippett's Mujician ( The Journey , 1990). From 1979 he was with the group Third Eye and with the trio of Rob van den Broeck , later also with Ali Haurand and Gerd Dudek as well as the European Jazz Ensemble . He continued to work in the trio of Philip Catherine and the trio of Sophia Domancich . From 1980 he formed a duo with Paul Dunmall (CD Spiritual Empathy , 1994). He also formed a trio with Aki Takase and John Edwards .

"As an imaginative and dynamic drummer, Levin is a sought-after improvised musician and performs regularly with the likes of Evan Parker , Barry Guy , Tony Oxley and the rest of the Mujician ," said Chris Parker in the Jazz Rough Guide .

Levin also ran a jazz club in Birmingham . His son Miles Levin is also a drummer.
