Paul Dunmall (born May 6, 1953 in Welling , Kent ) is a British saxophonist (soprano, baritone and tenor saxophone) and clarinetist of free and avant-garde jazz .

Act

At the beginning of his career, Paul Dunmall worked in the folk environment (including with Danny Thompson ), with bebop musicians and with Keith Tippett's band Mujician , and later with numerous musicians from the English free jazz scene such as Evan Parker , Elton Dean , Paul Rutherford . In 1979 he founded Spirit Level with Tim Richards . Since the 1980s he recorded a number of albums, first for the independent Duns Limited Edition label, and later for Slam , Cadence and HatHut Records . Guitarist John Adams, bassist Paul Rogers , drummers Tony Levin and Mark Sanders played sidemen on his albums .

The remarkable work The Great Divide was created in 1999 with an expanded line-up with guest musicians such as Paul Rutherford, Hilary Jeffries , Gethin Liddington , Elton Dean, Evan Parker and Keith Tippett . Dunmall was also involved in recordings by Elton Dean, Peter Fairclough , Matthew Bourne , the London Jazz Composers' Orchestra ( Zurich Concerts , 1987/88) and the formation "Spirit Level".

In addition to his main instruments, the saxophones and the clarinet, Dunmall plays the saxello and bagpipes .

Together with Jim Dvorak (tp), Mark Sanders (dr) and Chris Mapp (b), the album Cherry Pickin ' was created in 2014 .
