Daniel Henry Edward "Danny" Thompson (born April 4, 1939 in Teignmouth , Devon ) is a British jazz double bass player who has played with a number of well-known folk and rock music artists.

biography

Thompson was born in Teignmouth in southern England. After his father died in World War II , he moved to London with his family at the age of six . At school he played soccer and took lessons in guitar , mandolin , trumpet and trombone , but eventually specialized in double bass.

At the beginning of his career, Thompson's main interest was jazz , so he played for a short time in the band of British jazz saxophonist Tubby Hayes . In 1964 he then joined Alexis Korner 's Blues Incorporated, with whom he stayed for three years. In 1967 he left Korner's band with drummer Terry Cox to join the folk jazz band Pentangle . He also had a trio with guitarist John McLaughlin and woodwind player Tony Roberts.

In addition, Thompson began to work as a session musician for various bands and musicians, for example with Donovan , The Incredible String Band , Tim Buckley , Davey Graham , Nick Drake , Michael Chapman , Harold McNair , Joe McDonald , Mary Hopkin , Rod Stewart , Stefan Grossman , John Martyn , Tom Paxton , Magna Charta , Sandy Denny and Ralph McTell , even with T. Rex . After Pentangle separated in 1973, he intensified this work; he continued to accompany John Martyn, but also Donovan, Maddy Prior , Julie Felix , Bert Jansch , John Renbourn and Kate Bush . When Pentangle started a reunion in 1984, he was there again, but turned his back on the band in 1986. In 1987 Thompson released his solo debut Whatever , which was followed by Whatever Next in 1989 . He began touring with (unrelated) Richard Thompson in the 1990s and recorded an album with Peter Knight in 1998 .

He also worked with ABC , Tasmin Archer , Kevin Ayers , Blind Boys Of Alabama , Billy Bragg , Stephan Eicher , Everything but the Girl , Peter Gabriel , Yusuf Islam , Ketama & Toumani Diabaté , Peter Knight, Richie Kotzen , Dagmar Krause , Tom Robinson , David Sylvian , Talk Talk , The The , Hannes Wader , Loudon Wainwright III or Paul Weller .
