Ralph McTell
Ralph McTell (born December 3, 1944 in Farnborough , London ) is a folk- influenced English songwriter , singer and guitarist . He became known in 1974 with the song Streets of London .
biography
McTell's first album, Eight Frames a Second , was released in 1968. He became known in 1974 with a new recording of Streets of London , which was already included in a different version on his second album Spiral Staircase from 1969, and for which he received the Ivor Novello Award . After initial successes, such as B. Girl on a Bicycle (which was later covered by Herman van Veen in German) or England , a socially critical declaration of love for his home country, he turned more towards the commercially oriented mainstream in the 1970s . It wasn't until the end of the decade that he returned to this style of music in the wake of the emerging Irish Folk Revival.
In the 1980s, McTell worked on various children's programs; for example, he sang the theme song for the animated film series The Wind in the Weiden (1984-1988), and he took part in the BBC's Alphabet Zoo program . In December 2017 he re-recorded Streets of London with The Crisis Choir and Annie Lennox .
