Kevin Ayers (born August 16, 1944 in Herne Bay , Kent , † February 18, 2013 in Montolieu , Languedoc-Roussillon , France) was a British musician ( songwriter , singer , guitarist , bassist ).
Live and act
Ayers was the son of radio producer Rowan Ayers , who in the BBC the show The Old Gray Whistle Test initiated (before 1974 to ABC moved). After his parents separated, Kevin Ayers spent most of his childhood with his mother in Malaysia .
At the age of twenty he returned to England, where he attended boarding school and during his college days became a member of the Canterbury Scene and sang with the Wilde Flowers . From 1966 he was the bass player for the art rock band Soft Machine . In 1968 he got out and wrote songs to start a solo career. In 1970 he was the founder and head of the band The Whole World , in which Mike Oldfield played among others . He later worked with musicians such as composer David Bedford , saxophonist Lol Coxhill , Brian Eno , John Cale , Robert Wyatt and Nico . Ayers' most important and longest musical companion was the British guitarist Ollie Halsall (previously with Timebox and Patto ), who appears on some albums as a musician or arranger. Halsall also lived in Spain for some time, where he died of a heart attack from a drug overdose in 1992 at the age of 43. Most recently he recorded the album Still Life With Guitar with Ayers . Shooting at the Moon was added to The Wire's 100 Records That Set the World on Fire (While No One Was Listening) list.
After living in Spain for a long time, Kevin Ayers returned to England in the mid-1990s and most recently lived in the south of France, where he died in February 2013 at the age of 68.
