Joy of a Toy is Kevin Ayers ' first solo album , which came into being after he left the band Soft Machine in 1968.

It was released in 1969 on the Harvest Records label and was produced by Kevin Ayers and Peter Jenner . The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios . Among the participating musicians included members of Soft Machine and Paul Buckmaster , and Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd took part in the sessions. The track Religious Experience (Singing A Song in the Morning) recorded with him was not included on the album and was only released as a single in 1970.

reception

Joy of a Toy received mostly positive reviews from the critics. The music magazine Rolling Stone gave him four out of five stars. The Times calls it one of the best albums of all time.
