Paul Buckmaster

Paul Buckmaster (* 13. June 1946 as John Paul Buckmaster in London ; † 7. November 2017 in Los Angeles , California ) was a British musician ( cello , piano , keyboards ), composer and arranger .

Life

Buckmaster began learning the cello at the age of four. At the age of six he received first prizes; at the age of eleven he was admitted to classical instrumental studies at the Royal College of Music ; at the age of 16 he had his degree.

He became known for his work with Elton John . He has also arranged pieces for the Bee Gees , David Bowie , Michael Bublé , Leonard Cohen , Jamie Cullum , Mika , Harry Nilsson and the Rolling Stones . He also worked with the Third Ear Band (Music From Macbeth), later with Sun Treader and produced with Stomu Yamashta the first album the group Go . He wrote the music for the album Chitinous by the Chitinous Ensemble , in which Brian Smith and Ian Carr were among others . As a film music composer he was a. a. responsible for the soundtrack of the film 12 Monkeys .

In the field of jazz he also worked as a musician with Chris Barber , Miles Davis ( Big Fun , 1974), Neil Ardley ( Will Power: A Shakespeare Birthday Celebration in Music , 1974) and Tony Esposito . His ideas were also the starting point for the Miles Davis album On the Corner (1972).

Awards

At the Grammy Awards 2002 he won the Grammy for “Best Instrumental Arrangement with Vocal Accompaniment” for the song Drops of Jupiter by the American alternative band Train .
