The Third Ear Band was a British musical group that existed intermittently from 1967 to 1993. It is sometimes assigned to progressive rock , although it was rather untypical for rock music without electric instruments, but with violin , oboe and cello . Their music consisted of experimental improvisations with influences from Far Eastern raga and European folk .

Band history

The Third Ear Band was founded by jazz drummer Glen Sweeney, previously partner of Dave Tomlin in the avant-garde group "The Giant Sun Trolley" (1966-67), one of the main bands of the UFO Club , and drummer in the short-lived band "Hydrogen Jukebox "(1967).

Her first recordings were released in 1969 under the pseudonym "The National Balkan Ensemble". In 1969 her first album Alchemy was released under her own name. On June 7, 1969, she opened the concert of Blind Faith in London's Hyde Park on July 5, 1969, she played the legendary concert of the Rolling Stones at the same place. On August 31, 1969, they made an appearance at the second Isle of Wight Festival .

The band gained popularity mainly through their soundtracks for two films, Abelard and Heloise (1970) and especially Roman Polański's Macbeth (1971, album released 1972). The band broke up in 1973 and didn't get back together until the late 1980s. A few more albums were released before the final end came in 1993 after Sweeney's heart attack.
