Tasmin Archer (born August 3, 1963 in Bradford , Yorkshire ) is a British soul , pop and rock singer and songwriter . Her biggest hit in the late summer of 1992 was Sleeping Satellite .

biography

The daughter of Jamaican parents sang in various local bands and worked as a backing singer and toilet attendant at Bradford's Flexible Response Studios. With guitarist John Hughes and pianist John Beck, who became aware of her there, she wrote songs in Hughes' kitchen. The three musicians recorded demo tapes which they sent to various record companies . At first there were only rejections, also from the EMI Group , which then signed a contract with Archer in 1990.

The British woman's trademark is her powerful, soulful voice, with which she can express a wide range of emotions . Her first album Great Expectations , released in the fall of 1992 and produced by Elliot Randal, Robbie McIntosh and Paul Wickens, contained the hit Sleeping Satellite , which dealt philosophically with the moon landing . The single placed in the charts in Germany and Austria , in Switzerland and the USA , but also in Great Britain , where it even became a number one hit . The album was also successful in these countries.

Although the other singles and albums could not build on this success, she and her partner Hughes stayed true to their style. The track In Your Care made it to # 16 in the UK. By the spring of 1996, other singles hit the charts, albeit at lower ranks.

In 1993 Tasmin Archer won a BRIT Award for her breakthrough. The so far last studio album On was released in 2006. A remix of A Day Will Come in 2007 as a MP3 - Download available.
