biography

Stefan Grossman was born in New York in 1945 to the Jewish couple Herbert and Ruth Grossman. At 14, under the influence of Big Bill Broonzy's music, he decided to learn guitar. Reverend Gary Davis became his tutor.

Grossman recorded the old blues greats on tape and transcribed the pieces in their own tablature . From this he developed a teaching method that he published in books and on cassettes and records.

At the age of 18 he founded the Even Dozen Jug Band . After that he was a member of the Fugs for a short time and recorded the LP How to Play Blues Guitar with Rory Block . Since 1967 he has appeared increasingly solo. He traveled through Europe, lived in Italy, then in England and finally back in Italy.

In 1973 Stefan Grossman founded his own record label Kicking Mule Records , which he ran until 1980 and then sold. From 1976 Grossman worked frequently with John Renbourn , with whom he also recorded a number of albums and gave numerous concerts.

In 1987 Grossman moved back to America. He released new albums on the Canadian label Shanachie Records and again founded his own company: Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, through which he again publishes teaching material (cassettes, videos, CDs).
