Kicking Mule Records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kicking Mule Records was an American record label .

The company was founded in 1972 by Stefan Grossman and Eugene "ED" Denson . Fantasy Records later took over the label. In 2004, the Fantasy label and all of its sub-labels (including Kicking Mule) were bought up by the Concord Music Group .

During the 1970s , the label specialized in guitar fingerpicking musicians . Recorded artists were Grossman himself, Duck Baker , John Renbourn , Bob Brozman , Dale Miller , Davey Graham , Woody Mann , Chris Proctor, Peter Finger , Rev. Gary Davis , Michael Bloomfield , Dave Van Ronk , Charlie Musselwhite and Mickey Baker . In the 1980s , Denson ran the label alone and expanded the repertoire to include various dulcimer players. The name of the company is derived from the blues metaphor "there's another mule kicking in your stall". A few of the Kicking Mule recordings have been re-released on CD.
