Jim Dvorak

James P. "Jim" Dvorak (born December 16, 1948 in New York City ) is an American trumpeter and composer who has emerged in both jazz and improvisational music.

Live and act

Dvorak, who grew up in Brooklyn , received private instrumental lessons; between 1966 and 1970 he studied at the Eastman School of Music , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music. He then moved to London, where he found connection quickly, first in the band of Keith Tippett , then the Brotherhood of Breath of Chris McGregor , with which he was variously to 1975 on a European tour. Together with Keith Bailey , he founded the band Joy in 1973 , which existed for six years but only released an album in 1976. In 1975 and 1976 he was part of Louis Moholo's band . Between 1977 and 1979 he directed Sun Sum(The band included Elton Dean , Alan Skidmore , Keith Tippett, Harry Miller and Nick Evans ). He led the band Dhyana between 1980 and 1982. In the 1980s, he also belonged to Lol Coxhills Before Our Time , Geoff Serles Research , Dudu Pukwanas Zila , Maggie Nichols ' Very Varied , Nick Evans' Dreamtime , Ruthie Smiths Toot Sweet , Brian Abrahams ' District Six and to Tapestry by Keith Tippett. Between 1982 and 1987 he ran a venue for improvisation music , Club Extremor . From 1990 to 2004 he was a member of Phil Miller's In Cahoots , where he also recorded five albums. With Ken Hyder and Marcio Mattos he was a member of the Bardo State Orchestra , which also recorded an album with Tibetan monks.

Dvorak has also worked as arranger for Reebop Kwaku Baah , Harry Moscoe, the Guest Stars , Stan Sojoka, Annabel Lamb and The Dedication Orchestra . In 1979 he set George Orwell 's Animal Farm to music ; he also wrote ballet and stage music.

Dvorak has taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music , but has also taught internationally at workshops.
