Marcio Mattos (born March 20, 1946 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a musician ( double bass , cello ) of free improvisation music and ceramist living in England .

Mattos learned acoustic guitar as a teenager and, influenced by jazz , switched to bass as an autodidact . During his training at the Villa-Lobos Institute in Rio, he dealt more intensively with improvisation and electronic music . In 1970 he migrated to Great Britain, where he initially worked with John Surman , John Stevens and Keith Tippett . He recorded with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and played in Ken Hyders "Talisker" before joining Eddie Prévost's quartet . He appeared in various formations by Elton Dean and with Derek Bailey , but also with Dewey Redman and with Marilyn Crispell . In addition, he worked with ballet groups such as Ballet Rambert and the Extemporary Dance Theater Company, but also made electro-acoustic music with the "West Square Electronic Music Ensemble". He also worked with Georg Graewes “GrubenklangOrchester”, in various formations around Evan Parker , with Chris Burn and with Tony Oxley's “Celebration Orchestra”. With Chris Biscoe , Brian Godding and Tony Marsh he appeared as "Full Monte" and improvised with Maggie Nicols , with Michael Vatcher , with Paul Dunmall and with John Butcher . He is a member of the “Bardo State Orchestra” and the “ London Improvisers Orchestra ”, plays with Phil Minton , Fred Van Hove and Martin Blume in the group AXON and performs in Japan with musicians such as Shiku Yano, Akemi Kuniyoshi , Sabu Toyozumi and Keiko Midorikawa on. In 2006 he was part of Evan Parker's Transatlantic Art Ensemble ( Boustrophedon ).

In addition, Mattos has been active as a visual artist since training at Goldsmiths College (1981 to 1984); He works particularly with clay and has presented his work in various galleries and exhibitions around the world.
