Alan Tomlinson (* in Manchester ) is a British improvisation musician ( trombone ).

Live and act

Tomlinson studied trombone at the City of Leeds College of Music . He has been active on the improvisation scene since the early 1970s. He was initially a member of Tony Oxley's Angular Apron and the London Jazz Composers Orchestra directed by Barry Guy , and later to the Ballet Rambert Orchestra and the Electo-Acoustic Cabaret . He also worked in small line-ups with musicians such as Jon Corbett, David Toop , Phil Minton , Steve Beresford and Roger Turner , with whom he toured both Europe and North America. With Clive Bell , Peter Cusack and Sylvya Hallett he played at Kahondo style ethno jazz .

His first solo album Still Outside was released in 1980. Composers such as Orie Sato and Dolores White wrote compositions for him. He is currently touring with his trio, which includes guitarist Dave Tucker and drummer Phil Marks, and with the ensembles Sounds Positive and New Wind Chamber Group , in which he also conducts.
