Peter Cusack

Peter Cusack (* 1948 in London ) is a British musician ( guitar , bouzouki ) and sound artist .

Life

Cusack studied biochemistry at the University of Cambridge (graduation in 1969) and genetics at the University of Edinburgh (graduation in 1971), before studying composition at the Institute for Sonology in The Hague (1976). Since 1978 he was a member of the improvisation group Alterations (with Steve Beresford , David Toop and Terry Day ); In the mid-1980s he played with Alan Tomlinson , Clive Bell and Sylvya Hallett at Kahondo Style Ethno-Jazz . He also worked with Nic Collins , Chris Cutler , Max Eastley , Jon Rose , Evan Parker and Hugh Davies .

At the center of his work, which culminates in radio and CD productions in appearances and performances, lectures, exhibitions and installations, has been the man-made sound environment for more than 15 years, which Cusack has analyzed using models of acoustic ecology . In his project Favorite Sounds (since 1998) he identified the favorite sounds of the residents of big cities (London, 1998; Chicago, 2004; Beijing, 2005; Manchester and Prague, 2008/09, Berlin 2013). His Vermilion Sounds series on the topic of sound environment / environmental sounds was broadcast in over 50 episodes on the London radio station ResonanceFM between 2001 and 2006 . In 2004 he started the project series Sounds from Dangerous Places , documenting sounds from Chernobyl , the oil fields of Baku or dams in Turkey and making them accessible in installations in other places or with CDs and accompanying booklets. Cusack's Positive Soundscape Project (2006/09) dealt with the inclusion of sound environments in urban planning .

Cusack has taught and worked at the London College of Communication and the University of the Arts London .
