Gordon Beck

Gordon James Beck (born September 16, 1936 in London ; † November 6, 2011 ) was a British jazz musician ( piano and composition ).

Live and act

Beck was born in the Brixton district of London in 1936 . He initially had a classical training in piano, but then became a technical draftsman. He worked in Canada for a year, where he became interested in jazz. From 1962 he played in Tony Kinsey's band, then for several years in the Tubby Hayes quintet and as a companion for Annie Ross . Together with Tony Oxley and bassist Jeff Clyne he founded a trio that made several records, including a. one with John McLaughlin as a guest. From 1969 to 1972 he played in the European festival very successful European Rhythm Machine by Phil Woods . Beck then founded the group Gyroscope , but also played with Ian Carrs Nucleus and the Piano Conclave of George Gruntz . He also worked as a studio musician, u. a. for Chris Hinze and Mel Tormé . Then he was a member of Didier Lockwood's group , played with Allan Holdsworth on a world tour in 1985 and accompanied Helen Merrill . Electronic activities have come to the fore since the 1990s.
