Stan Sulzmann

Stan Sulzmann (born November 30, 1948 in London ) is a British jazz saxophonist .

Live and act

Sulzmann started out as a saxophonist in blues bands. In 1965 he was a member of the first edition of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra ; then he worked as a ship musician on the Queen Mary . He then studied at the Royal Academy of Music . He played in the bands of John Dankworth , Graham Collier and Michael Gibbs ; at the same time he was employed as a house musician with Ronnie Scott and appeared there with Clark Terry , Sonny Rollins , Johnny Griffin and the Kenny Clarke / Francy Boland Big Band . In 1970 he formed his first quartet with John Taylor , Ron Mathewson and Tony Levin , which existed for more than ten years. In 1973 and 1974 he was a member of the John Taylor Sextet, which emerged from the Alan Skidmore quintet . He was also involved in recordings by John Surman / John Warren and Volker Kriegel . Later he was a member of the quintet of Kenny Wheeler and Dave Holland , but also Ali Haurand's European Jazz Ensemble . Sulzmann also worked in a duo with Mark Copland , in the Alleric Saxophone Quartet with Evan Parker , Julian Argüelles and Ray Warleigh and in his Bass Quartet with two bassists and Steve Argüelles . He has worked on recordings for Gavin Bryars , Joachim Kühn , Tony Hymas , Chet Baker and the Khan Family . In 2015 the duo album Stardust was released with the pianist Nikki Iles , followed by Shadow Painting (2019, with Nick Smart , Ross Stanley , Tim Giles ) and Lush Life (2019, with Nikki Iles and Dave Holland ).
