Nikki Iles
Nikki Anne Iles (* 16th May 1963 in Dunstable , Bedfordshire as Nikki Burnham ) is a British jazz musician ( piano , even accordion , arrangements and composition ).
Live and act
Nikki Iles' father was a drummer and her mother a pianist. She first learned the harmonica and clarinet . At age eleven, she won a youth competition at the Royal Academy of Music ; There she studied clarinet and piano from 1974 to 1981. During this time she became a member of the Bedfordshire Youth Jazz Orchestra . After coming into contact with jazz, she studied alto saxophone and piano at Leeds College of Music from 1981 to 1984 .
First she went with Bobby Wellins . With her husband at the time, the trumpeter Richard Iles , she founded the formation Emanon , which also included Mike Walker (guitar) and Iain Dixon (saxophone); the other members all came from the Creative Jazz Orchestra or had worked with Vince Mendoza , Michael Gibbs , Kenny Wheeler . Iles also played with various London bands such as the Steve Argüelles Band, Mick Hutton's Straight Face , the Stan Sulzmann Quartet, with Tina May and with Karen Sharp . With Norma Winstone , Mike Walker, Mark Lockheart , Steve Watts and James Maddren she formed the sextet The Printmakers ( Westerly , 2015). Iles has worked on recordings with Tina May, Sylvan Richardson , the Mike Gibbs Orchestra ( Ah Hum , 1994), Stan Sulzmann, Anthony Braxton , Martin Speake , Geoff Simkins , Ingrid Laubrock , Karen Sharp, Georgia Mancio and Scott Hamilton . Appearances with her at the Pizza Express Steinway 2-Piano Festival 2011 (with Kate Williams ) were broadcast on the radio.
Iles teaches at Middlesex University ; previously she was at the University of York , Leeds College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and worked in Bulgaria, the Netherlands, France and Finland.
Prizes and awards
In 1996 Iles received the John Dankworth Special Award at the BT Jazz Festival . At the British Jazz Awards 2017 she won best pianist; In 2019 she received the Ivors Academy Award . In 2020 she and her 20-piece jazz orchestra won the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in the Jazz Ensemble of the Year category .
