James Maddren

James Maddren (* around 1987 in Sussex ) is a British jazz - drummer .

Maddren grew up in Horsham , West Sussex and comes from a musical family; his mother was a piano teacher and his father a cellist. As a child he first learned the cello , then piano and drums. In 2004, while still at school, he took lessons from Jim Hart in London . From 2005 he studied jazz percussion at the Royal Academy of Music with Trevor Tomkins and Martin France . In the mid-2000s he was a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra , with which the first recordings were made. When he graduated in 2009, he received the Principal's Award for Outstanding Studentship . From 2009 he was a member of the trio of pianist Gwilym Simcock and the trio of Kit Downes , whose album Golden was nominated for the Mercury Prize . Maddren has played in various British jazz groups, such as the George Crowley Quartet, Jonathan Bratoëff Quartet, the Mark McKnight Organ Quartet and in 2020 the Alex Hitchcock Quartet. He also worked on recordings by Ivo Neame , John Warren and Kenny Wheeler / Norma Winstone . In the field of jazz he was involved in 19 recording sessions between 2006 and 2013.
