Trevor Tomkins

Trevor Ramsey Tomkins (born May 12, 1941 in London ) is a British drummer of modern and fusion jazz .

Tomkins studied at Blackheath Conservatory and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama . After initially playing the trombone, he switched to the drum set in 1960. He became a professional musician as a member of the quintet of Don Rendell and Ian Carr , of which he was a member from 1963 until it was dissolved in 1969. In the late 1960s he was also a member of the New Jazz Orchestra . He also worked with Michael Garrick , but also with Henry Lowther , Keith Tippett , Nucleus (as percussionist), Barbara Thompson , Mike Westbrook , Tony Coe and the Canterbury band Gilgamesh . For a while he was part of the house band at Ronnie Scott's Club , where he accompanied musicians such as Phil Woods , Sonny Stitt , Pepper Adams and Art Farmer . In 1985 he toured the UK with Lee Konitz . He also played in the trio of his cousin, the pianist and film composer Roy Budd .

He was a music lecturer at the Royal Academy of Music and gave workshops at Guildhall .
