Pepper Adams
Pepper Adams (actually Park Adams, * 8. October 1930 in Highland Park , Michigan ; † 10. September 1986 in New York ) was an American baritone saxophonist of hard bop . In contrast to Gerry Mulligan, he used a hard, hands-on style of playing and was therefore called "The Knife" by his colleagues in the Stan Kenton Orchestra . Other important stations were the collaboration with Charles Mingus , his quintet with co-leader Donald Byrd and the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Big Band .
Live and act
Pepper Adams grew up in Rochester , New York , and made his first appearances there as a tenor saxophonist and clarinetist. When his family moved to Detroit , the fifteen-year-old Pepper met African American musicians and in 1947 played as a baritone saxophonist with Lucky Thompson . After studying and two years of military service in Korea, he played from 1953 with Tommy Flanagan , Paul Chambers , Elvin Jones and Kenny Burrell , with whom he went to New York in 1956. After a brief stint in the big band of Stan Kenton , he worked with Maynard Ferguson . After a tour to the west coast with Mel Lewis, Adams worked mainly in New York with his own groups, such as Donald Byrd , Jimmy Knepper and Bobby Timmons , with whom he also appeared at the Five Spot jazz club , and played freelance with Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus, among others , with which he recorded the album Blues and Roots in 1959 . In the 1960s he began working with the orchestra of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis , to which he was to belong from 1965 with interruptions until 1978. Adams also worked on his own albums, such as with Zoot Sims , Walter Norris and Roland Hanna . In 1981 he was a member of the Dizzy Gillespie Dream Band . Shortly before his death he worked at as a guest soloist Suite Mingus by Denny Christianson with.
His style on the baritone saxophone influenced Scott Robinson and Gary Smulyan , among others .
