Frank Basile

Frank Basile (born May 14, 1978 in Illinois ) is an American jazz musician ( baritone , alto and tenor saxophone , clarinet , flutes ) who works in the field of big band music and modern jazz .

Live and act

Millian grew up in Nebraska and received music lessons in elementary school; After four years of lessons on the clarinet and alto saxophone, the baritone saxophone became his main instrument. He gained his first experience in big bands and jazz combos in the Omaha area . Since the 1980s he played in the Sonny Costanzo Big Band, with whom the first recordings with Marlene VerPlanck were made in 1989 . He went to the University of North Texas to study . There he played for six semesters in the One O'Clock Lab Band , with whom he can be heard on several albums (also with Kenny Wheeler ). After completing his Bachelor in Jazz Studies , which he completed with honors, he moved to New York City in mid-2001 to take part in the Juilliard School of Music 's first jazz study program.

He drew attention to himself early on with Mike Longo and his large-format New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble , with whom he also recorded ( Explosion , Aftermath ). In a quintet line-up (with Joe Magnarelli , Adam Birnbaum (piano), Mike Blanco (bass) and Mark Ferber ) Basile recorded his debut album Thursday the 12th in 2005 , followed by Joy Road - The Complete Works of Pepper Adams , Volume Three ( Motéma ), with Joe Magnarelli, John Mosca , Adam Birnbaum, Dennis Irwin and Tim Horner . In the 2000s and 2010s he continued to play with Michael Bublé ( Caught in the Act ), Idan Santhaus , Akira Satō and David Sanborn as well as in the big bands of Russ Spiegel , Sam Sadigursky , Joe Traina , Attilio Troiano , Cecilia Coleman , Dave Stahl , Joshua Schneider, Joe Chambers , Bob Mintzer , Jimmy Heath , Jason Jackson , Hinton Battle / Count Basie Orchestra ( Ghost Band ), John Yao , with the Dick Oatts / Mats Holmquist New York Jazz Orchestra and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra ( Over Time - Music of Bob Brookmeyer , 2014). In the field of jazz he was involved in 50 recording sessions between 1998 and 2016, most recently with the Brett Gold New York Jazz Orchestra. In 2020 he was a member of the Richie Vitale Quintet and led the Boss Baritones quintet with Gary Smulyan (with Ehud Asherie , David Wong and Mark Taylor).

Basile has lectured at New School , New York University , Eastman School of Music , Temple University , University of North Carolina at Greensboro , State University of New York at Purchase , University of Nebraska, and with the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Orchestra.
