Dave Stahl

Dave Stahl (* 1949 ) is an American jazz trumpeter and band leader .

Life

Stahl studied music education at Pennsylvania State University until 1970 and then played in an army band . In 1973 he was discharged from the military, most recently as a soloist with The Army Band , lead trumpeter with Army Blues and first trumpeter with the White House Herald Trumpets . He was then lead trumpeter with Woody Herman and His Orchestra until 1975, and from 1975 to 1980 he played with the Count Basie Orchestra . During this time he was also active for the Buddy Rich Big Band , Larry Elgart and his band and the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra.

In April 1977 he finally founded his own big band , The Dave Stahl Band , followed ten years later by his music label Abee Cake Records and his music publisher Dave Stahl Music , which exploits through the BMI . In 1989 he founded a second music publisher, Dasta Music , which is affiliated with ASCAP . During this time he toured the world with Liza Minnelli as their lead trumpeter and performed at Carnegie Hall , among others .

In the spring of 1999 Stahl put together his Sacred Orchestra , a 23-piece orchestra (large big band with added strings ) with 10 singers.

Other greats with whom he appeared were Frank Sinatra , Ella Fitzgerald , Tony Bennett , Mel Tormé , Jack Jones , Sarah Vaughan and Engelbert Humperdinck .
